Primeval Recs from Previous Journal for Reference (Part the Second)

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: PG 13
Characters: All OCs
Length: Short Story
What I Love about this: We're back on my list of "stories written for me". This one was written by [livejournal.com profile] rodlox for the first Primeval ficathon. It's a swash-buckling tale of a historical anomaly team. I'd actually love to see more of this kind of story, anomaly teams throughout history, fighting dinosaurs with the technology they have to hand!

In Various Grades

Fandom: Primeval
Characters: Jon Lyle, Hamza Sayed
Rating: PG-13
Length: 3 x 100
Why I love this: I'm posting Hamza Sayed fic at the moment and that reminded me of this lovely trio of drabbles by [livejournal.com profile] lonely_candle, dealing with the aftermath of my Night Before Christmas story from Hamza's point of view. She's a great writer and this helped define my view of Lyle and Hamza's friendship.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Fandom: Primeval
Length: Drabble
Character: Connor
Rating: PG
What I love about this: This is a stunning little what-if drabble which compares a lovely SF-nal idea that springs nicely from the premise of the show, with some lovely Connor character-work.

Tempus Genesis

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 18
Length: 4 part series
Characters/Pairings: Team-fic plus Ryan/Stephen (part 1) and Lester/Lyle (part 4)
What I love about this: My favourite thing about this story is that the threat is so imaginative! Fred has come up with something a little bit different from the stock story of some rampaging beastie coming through an anomaly and it's quietly gripping. That said, parts 1 and 4 are predominantly spelling and grammar, in fact you could probably skip part 1 entirely and not miss any plot. I'm not under any illusions, however, that my flist are likely to do that!!! It's part of Fred's Ryan/Stephen series. I think it mostly stands alone once you know that Lyle is one of her special forces characters.

Fandom: Primeval
Genre: Femslash
Length: Short Story
Pairing: Helen/Jenny
Rating: NC-17

What I love about this: I'm sure I could write something terribly intellectual here if I chose but the bottom line is I just like hot femslash, there isn't a great deal of it in Primeval fandom, but this is one of them!

Experimental

Fandom: Primeval
Length: Short Story
Rating: U
Characters: Abby, Lacey

What I Love about this: This was one of the very early fics to use Private Lacey, one of the soldiers we saw in the background in seasons 1 and 2, named by Reggie. The story itself is very simple. Abby and Lacey are stuck in a cave in the Jurassic for a short period of time and while there, they discuss the things that interest them: animals, weapons, the job and working in with all these men about. It's a beautifully drawn character study of two women not really used to dealing with other women in their particular work, slowly getting to know each other.

A Cave in the Jurassic

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Nick/Stephen, Team

What I love about this: This is a simply wonderful action adventure team story. It's set in season 1 and very much captures the feel of those episodes. The team work really well together, [livejournal.com profile] bigtitch explores their developing dynamics in a believable way and there's even a look-in for Fred's special forces OCs. It's a really satisfying gen-with-hints-of-slash action read.

Part 1
Part 2

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Nick/Jenny, Jenny/Sarah
Length: Five Drabbles

What I love about this: This is a very short sequence of five drabbles telling Jenny's story in the year after Nick dies. They are punchy, bittersweet and tender all at once, each an excellent drabble in its own right and forming a perfect whole.

Once Upon a Year Gone By

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Connor, Lester
Length: Short Story

What I love about this: This is a really spot on angsty little story about Connor and Lester and the aftermath of Nick's death. A hanky is probably required. Lester is a joy throughout, sarcastic and concerned by turns, Connor is angst-ridden and there's even a cuddle at the end for the Connor/Lester shippers out there.

Names. Dates. Places.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 15
Characters/Pairings: Claudia/Lester
Length: Flashfic

What I love about this: I think there are two things I particularly like about this story (apart from the hot sex, obviously). The first is that this is such an unusual pairing in the fandom, despite the two characters having so much in common and the second is the way Claudia emerges from the story with the upper hand.

Brief Interlude

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: R
Characters/Pairings: Stephen/Ryan, Cutter, Connor, Abby, Jenny, Blade, Ditzy, Kermit, Captain Jacobs, Anders, Rees.
Length: 16,500 words.

What I love about this: This was [profile] munchkinofdoom's contribution to the 2009 Denial Secret Santa. It is the kind of long plotty story with magical overtones that I absolutely love. The magic here is steeped in folklore and myth that evokes an incredible sense of place and atmosphere.

The story is also set in a mythical second season where Ryan, Stephen and Cutter are all fine and getting along famously so, really, what's not to like?

Part 1
Part 2

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: K+
Characters/Pairings: Nick/Jenny, Stephen/Ryan, Helen
Length: Short Story

What I love about this: This is a ghost story set after Jenny leaves the ARC and explaining her reasons for going. It has a very gentle, lyrical atmosphere. It carefully negotiates a fine line between sugary sweetness and providing hope and closure for all the events-which-must-not-be-named and it's ending is both tragic and uplifting.

It also has a throwaway line in which Nick faces off Winston Churchill which is probably worth it, in and of itself.

Nightly Visitors

Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Stephen/Ryan
Rating: From PG to NC-17
Length: Two multi-part stories and two shorts.

[livejournal.com profile] bigtitch wrote this very clever and thoughtful "what-if" following on from the events-which-cannot-be-mentioned and riffing off the time-line change. I'm not sure why I'm being coy about the set up, given everyone on my flist who is interested has probably read the story already, but just on the off-chance, I won't say more because I think it benefits from being part of the story.

Be Careful What you Wish For (3/3)

[livejournal.com profile] bigtitch clearly knew a fixit would be demanded for the rather downbeat ending of Be Careful What you Wish For and so The Problem with Ligtening followed, complete with bonus extra epilogue.

The Problem with Lightening - Epilogue

However this didn't do either. Primeval fans like to be absolutely certain that everything is fixed. So [livejournal.com profile] bigtitch gave us Three Times Ryan didn't say "I Love You" and One Time he Did

and (because Fifi claimed she was still traumatised)

Priorities

After which it's frankly astonishing [livejournal.com profile] bigtitch is still in the fandom.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 18
Characters/Pairings: Abby/Sarah
Length: Short Story

What I love about this: Femslash again, Bella was inspired to write an awkward pre-series first meeting between Abby and Sarah when she learned they were both supposed to have been born in Brighton. It nicely captures the awkwardness and pressures of being young, constrasts the bookish Sarah with an Abby that holds people at a distance and generally rings true.

The Main Event

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Team
Length: Drabble

What I love about this: This is a very clever little drabble show-casing the season 1 team as they encounter a creature. Given it only lasts 100 words I think I might spoil it if I say more!!

Creatures

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: PG/12A
Characters/Pairings: Ditzy, Lester, Lyle
Length: Short Story, Fixit of sorts.

What I love about this: What I love about this, to be honest, is the breath-taking pace of it, and the clear medical knowledge that has gone into writing it. You really feel as though you are there in the ambulance. It's also a fixit of sorts for Primeval episode 3.03.

Heart Breaking

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 18
Characters/Pairings: Jenny, Sarah
Length: Two Drabbles

What I love about this: Primeval plus zombies is an obvious combination... well obvious-ish anyway (there have been several shots at it), but I like this one for its doom-laden feel and the zombie point of view.

The Hunger

It's a brilliant little story describing how Caroline and Leek meet up. It's told from Caroline's point of view and makes her thoroughly believable without in any way trying to whitewash her.

Opportunity Knocks (PG)

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Stephen/Ryan
Length: Short Story

What I love about this: My very favourite thing about this story is the prose, particularly the way each section opens but also the way it plays with viewpoints, and manages to make its language sound vaguely formal and like a fairy tale while still being thoroughly modern. It's also a sweet little romance.

Once Upon a Time

Thanks in no small part to manic championing by [personal profile] bella_farfalla, Jenny/Sarah, became almost the default pairing for Sarah on denial. In the end, however, I haven't picked one of Bella's many wonderful Jenny/Sarah fics but this heart-breaking and beautiful piece by [personal profile] taricha which asks what happened when Jenny left the team and Abby, Connor and Danny were lost. You will need hankies within reach.

A Slow by Inevitable Fall (PG)

Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Ships: Nick, Lester
Genre: Episode Response
Length: Short Story
What I love about this: This basically fills in the events between Stephen's death and funeral. It has action and thrills but what really stands out is the character work on Lester, fleshing out both his professional and personal relationships with the rest of the team.

Clearing the Decks

Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Ships: Helen/Jenny
Rating: NC-17
Length: Flashfic
What I Love about this: So I would seem to be wired up differently from about 90% of the fandom, but that doesn't mean there aren't some forms of spelling and punctuation than I find I can admire as intended. So... err.. yeah... nothing that constitutes a plot here, I'm afraid. I like it anyway.

One Night Stand

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 15
Characters: Nick-centric
Length: 4 parts
What I love about this: This is a gen story examining Nick's reaction to and recovery from Stephen's death. It has many lovely touches and scenes from Jenny and Private Lacey clearing out Stephen's flat, to new boy on the team Dickon and his struggles to become accepted.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: NC-17
Genre: Femslash
Pairing: Claudia/Helen
What I love about this: This another of Cordeliadelayne's femslash PWPs. As well as being femslash I love the way that Claudia turns the tables on Helen in this one.
