Primeval Recs from Previous Journal for Reference (Part the Third)

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Connor, S2 Team
Length: approx 13,000

What is this?: I think this was one of the earliest long plotty fics I read in the fandom so I'm not sure quite why its taken me so long to get around to reccing it. It's set during season 2 and is a Connor centric fic that tries to address some of the more minor changes between seasons 1 and 2, as well as creating an encounter between the ARC team and early humans.

cross-posted to denial

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: Unrated but I'm going to go with PG for the start.
Characters/Pairings: Nick/Stephen
Length: Short story

What is this?: When I introduced myself at the start of the month I claimed that I would be recommending the unusual but I don't think anything I've recced so far has been particularly left of field. However, this is definitely left of field. And definitely not denial friendly. I love a lot of [personal profile] faye_dartmouth's writing. She has a real gift for sparse yet beautiful prose and haunting imagery. This story uses this to great effect as Stephen finds himself in a landscape which isn't heaven, but it's not hell.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Claudia, Connor
Length: 2,522 words

What is this?: This is a lovely, wistful, sweet fic. Connor, grieving for Nick, crosses the timelines and find Claudia Brown, also grieving. It's beautifully written and captures Claudia really well through the eyes of a Connor who has never met her before.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: G and K respectively
Characters/Pairings: Elizabeth Darcy, Lester, Ryan
Length: Two drabbles

What is this?: I'm going to do a little plug for [livejournal.com profile] primeval100 here, which is a weekly drabble challenge community. I think most [livejournal.com profile] primeval_denial regulars are probably aware of it since a lot of drabbles get cross-posted, but for those who don't know it, it's probably the most active Primeval community on LJ aside from denial and well worth checking out if you enjoy reading drabbles or are interested in a weekly writing exercise.

Earlier this year the challenge prompt was "Pride and Prejudice" which, in my opinion, generated a quality crop of drabbles. I've picked my two favourites to rec here together - I think they are both witty little pieces with a strong nod towards the Austen story as well as a clear Primeval connection - Enjoy!.

The image on cover was created by [livejournal.com profile] inamac to go with her drabble.

Crossposted to Denial.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 18
Characters/Pairings: Connor, Becker
Length: approx. 2,330 words

What is this?: This is character death angst, so consider yourselves warned! But it is good character death angst! Connor and a badly wounded Becker are trapped on the far side of an anomaly. The writing is stark and the story tightly focused on their predicament. The ending is a surprise but follows logically from the story itself.

The Dying of the Light by [livejournal.com profile] deinonychus_1

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: Explicit
Characters/Pairings: Becker/Connor
Length: 15,907

What is this?: I think this is adequately described by the phrase "Apocalyptic Road Trip". Becker and Connor, in a world devastated by future predators, drive off across the United States. They have a loose destination in mind and a determination to close every anomaly they come across en route. The writing is incredibly atmospheric, the sense of every post-apocalyse and road trip movie is well captured and the growing relationship between Connor and Becker is very believable. Highly recommended.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: R
Characters/Pairings: Abby/Ryan
Length: Multi-part story

What is this?: The story of a small group of characters trapped together in quarantine while racing to find a cure is a fairly standard trope in both TV and films. Oddly it isn't one that has been used very often in Primeval fanfiction which makes this story both familiar and yet different. It's nicely atmospheric as the paranoia and tension mounts for those trapped within the quarantine. As a bonus the central pairing is also one that is unusual in Primeval fanfiction, which is somewhat surprising especially given how well it works here.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 12
Characters/Pairings: Connor, Cutter, Team
Length: 44,591 Words

What is this?: This was [livejournal.com profile] deinonychus_1's Primeval big bang. It's a Connor-centric story which deals with hero worship, growing up and out-growing our families. It's set late in series 2 and is canonical up to that point (though it ignores the end of the series) and treats the various relationships as they appear in canon. It's very much intended to read like the series itself and so features plenty of action as well as the more character-focused stuff.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 15
Characters/Pairings: Stephen/Ryan
Length: 8,000 words

What is this?: This is another story in [personal profile] fredbassett's long-running Stephen/Ryan series. This is more low key than many and focuses on a different kind of threat than that posed by the various creatures that come through the anomalies. I have wished sometimes that the show itself could take this kind of step away from itself and do something a little different from the norm.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: R
Characters/Pairings: Connor/Ryan
Length: Short Story

What is this?: Well it must be said I don't often read, and more rarely recommend, straight-up PWP slash writing, but this one is worth reading* for its pitch-perfect Connor internal monologue. It probably counts as borderline crack, but is close enough to the character that it can be read straight as well.

In the Middle of the Woods by [livejournal.com profile] oddegg

*given the proclivities of most of my flist "it's PWP slash" is, to be honest, probably recommendation in and of itself but on the off-chance that the mere prospect of pretty boys having sex isn't your thing...

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 15
Characters/Pairings: Claudia/Ryan
Length: Over 5,000 words

What is this?: Well this would bubble up to the top of my list on just about the hottest day of the year so far. [personal profile] fredbassett wrote this for me for the 2010 primeval_denial secret santa. The prompts I had given were 1) Actual meeting with Santa, crack kept to minimum, go with the wonder. 2) Snow, sparkles, starlight. 3) Yuletide folklore and fred went for the jackpot and used all three to produce this magical Christmas tale in which Claudia takes Ryan home to meet her family who, it turns out, are not entirely normal.

The Devil's Knell by [personal profile] fredbassett

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 15
Characters/Pairings: Lorraine/Blade, Christine, Team
Length: 11 chapters.

What is this?: This fic plays with time line changes by catapulting Lorraine's Special Forces boyfriend, Blade, into a world in which she is Christine's PA instead of Lester's. It works well as an introduction/sideways look at [personal profile] lonely_candle's Lorraine/Blade stories as well as being a compelling retelling of Season 3 from within Christine's camp.

Characters/Pairings: Stephen

What is this?: It's a drabble which both captures Stephen's position and casts a new light upon it - one of those things that drabbles can do really well.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: 12
Characters/Pairings: Stephen/Becker
Length: 8 drabbles (800 words)

What is this?: This was generated as part of the [livejournal.com profile] primeval_denial Stephen drabble tree for Team Fest 2. It's an inspired piece of crack, chronicling Stephen's desperate attempts to compete with Becker in the gorgeous action-man stakes.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: T
Characters/Pairings: Ryan/Jess
Length: Short

What is this?: This is a lovely little story, which is an excellent show case for Jess. It takes an extremely rare pairing of the kind you can only find in [livejournal.com profile] primeval_denial and makes it fully believable - which is quite a feat given how dissimilar these characters appear at first glance. A grumpy Major Ryan is told a few home truths by the tiny field operations coordinator.

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: K+
Characters/Pairings: Nick, Ryan

What I love about this: It's a short little drabble but it's take on the prompt `Anniversary' is one I'd never have thought of but which feels totally believable.

Memorial

Fandom: Primeval
Rating: R/15
Characters/Pairings: Becker, Team
Length: Six (fairly short) Parts

What is this?: This hysterical story appeared about eighteen months ago and pretty much instantly obtained classic status. Captain Becker writes his diary while beset by the irritating attentions of both his family and the ARC Team.

Unsurprisingly, given their instant rapport in the first episode of season 3, there is endless speculation about the previous relationship of Christine and Lester. In this story [livejournal.com profile] curia_regis takes that curiousity and then twists it slightly to refocus the story onto how Christine became interested in the anomalies, giving us a whole layer of betrayal Lester probably wasn't even aware of.

For England (PG) by [livejournal.com profile] curia_regis

There was never really any question which author I would pick for a Lorraine rec, the difficulty was choosing which story to recommend. In the end I've picked one of [livejournal.com profile] lonely_candle's very early stories about Lorraine Wickes and her boyfriend, the Special Forces soldier Blade (created by [personal profile] fredbassett). This story is set before they even become boyfriend and girlfriend so there's no real back-story and not much fanon needed to enjoy it, but it showcases the characters and their relationship well and I hope, if you enjoy it, you will explore [livejournal.com profile] lonely_candle's master list and read the other stories in the series.
