Primeval Recs from Previous Journal for Reference (part the first)
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Ships: Abby/Claudia
Genre: Romance, Angst
Length: Flashfic
What I love about this: I do bad things to Luka and force her to write stuff that isn't slash. This lovely birthday fic she wrote me is an angsty little Abby/Claudia. She apologised for it not being fluffy, but it's dark and rich and bittersweet like good chocolate, so I couldn't really complain.
Will you Still Love me Tomorrow?
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Claudia/Ryan
Length: 3 part story
Genre: Romance
Rating: NC-17
What I love about this: This is set before the Primeval series and tells a kind of love story between Claudia and Ryan, but one that focuses on the support and friendship they offer each other (although there are also added benefits) and brings them to a point where you can absolutely believe in how much they mean to each other despite their minimal interaction in the series itself. It's a lovely tale, beautifully told.
Part 1: Circles
Part 2: Fall
Part 3: Inside
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Team
Length: 16 page comic strip
Genre: Humour, Crack!Fic
Rating: 15
What I love about this: This comic burst, unexpectedly, onto the Primeval scene in December 2008 and is completely unlike anything before or since. It retells the first episode as if the events were part of a roleplaying game in which a long-suffering GM tries to control an unruly group of players from Nick Cutter and his obsession with "dino hos" to Stephen and his obsession with Nick. As well as the hysterically funny dialogue this is presented as a photo comic strip which somehow manages to make it even funnier. Read and enjoy.

Rating: 14 A
What I love about this: Another story written for me. I must rec something else next week *g*. I'd asked for a resolution to the Helen storyline that didn't involve her going totally mad and I got this very satisfying and timey-wimey tale of Helen reaching a final conclusion about who is to blame for the distorted future.
"And Yes, We Changed the World"
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Jenny, Claudia
Length: Short Story
Genre: Weird Timey-Wimey Stuff
Rating: 12
What I love about this: I adore Sapphire and Steel. I love the surreal sense of mystery, the atmosphere in which things kind-of almost make sense in a lyrical fashion. I think Fred knows this. For my birthday she wrote me this beautiful atmospheric piece covering the transition from Claudia to Jenny in the midst of a cold winter's landscape.
Winter's Rage
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Jenny/Sarah
Length: Short Story
Genre: Romance, Femslash
Rating: PG
What I love about this: This was written for me, which is always a bonus when it comes to fic. It is based on a prompt I gave for a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay and captures the atmosphere of disillusionment and maturity in the poem while nevertheless managing to give Jenny a happy ending.
What Lips my Lips have Kissed
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Ryan, Stephen
Length: Two Multi-Part Series
Genre: Romance
Rating: 18+
What I love about this: This is a lovingly told romance story really, of Captain Tom Ryan meeting Stephen Hart and the development of their relationship, surrounded by the miscellaneous supporting cast of Ryan's men, their wives and girlfriends and Ryan's neighbour. It then segues, in Firestorm, into dealing with the fall-out of Ryan's near-death (this story is firmly in denial about certain events in the TV Show) and charts a different course of events over season 2, where Stephen and Ryan leave the team and try to distance themselves from dinosaur mayhem. There's a lot of "grammar and punctuation" if that sort of thing pushes the relevant buttons, but even if it doesn't they are beautifully written and well worth reading if you are a sucker for romance (like I am).

What I love about this: I believe this was Munchkin's first attempt at a Primeval story and it's a good-un. A long gen-fic about an anomaly on a remote Scottish island, with plenty of satisfying twists and turns, excitement and bags of atmosphere.

What I love about this: I don't often add drabbles to memories. We produce so many of them in the fandom but I thought, and still do, that this one is a hysterically funny take on the prompt "Comfort" while, at the same time, being a sharp and insightful look at character.
Comfort
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Stephen/Ryan, Lester/Lyle
Length: Long - 10 Parts
Spoilers: None
Rating: 18
What I love about this: Where to start? It's probably true to say that
primeval_denial would be a very, very different place without Fred's OCs. This isn't her first story starring them but I think, for many of us, it's the definitive story and it's the one that brings Lester together with Jon Lyle. However what I really, really love about The Devil's Crowl is the caving. You can tell Fred really knows her stuff and it's when the story goes underground that the tension shifts up a gear and it becomes impossible to stop reading.

Genre: Crack!fic
Rating: PG-13 ish?
What I Love about This: This is the fic that started Sanctuary and if you don't know what Sanctuary is... well you had better read the story really. It's hysterically funny, deeply, deeply cracky and started off one particularly rich seam of crack!fic set in the Primeval universe. What is more I, personally, think the original Sanctuary story is the best.

What I Love about This: This is a lovely atmospheric piece of writing that combines Primeval with a spooky fairytale in a way that really evokes an otherworldly feel. It was also written for me as a birthday present, which is always a plus!
Away with the Fairies
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Liz Lester, Lester/Lyle
Length: Three Short Fics
Spoilers: None
What I Love about This:
lonely_candle is one of my favourite authors in the fandom and these three short stories were the ones that originally made me fall in love with her work. They are quiet character pieces but they never drag. In my head I call them the Triptych because they work so well together. They are set in the early days of Lester's relationship with
fredbassett's OC Lyle and, in particular, feature Liz discovering that relationship, but in a way the discovery is much less important than the exploration of these three people and how they feel about each other. The whole sequence hinge around a sketch drawn by Lester.

A Bit Sketchy
What's in a Name?
Fandom: Primeval
Characters/Pairing: Claudia/Ryan
Length: Flashfic
Spoilers: 1.06
What I Love about This: This is a look inside Ryan's head just before he steps through the anomaly at the end of 1.06. I like it partly because it's a slightly harsher look at Ryan than is common in fandom. We have a habit of writing our Primeval team as if they are all friends and Reggie has chosen here to treat Ryan much more as a man with a job and people he works with. At the same time he is nevertheless sympathetic and the tale is beautifully tragic given the events of the episode.
