Summary:

A single rumor could move mountains, or topple thrones. Sejanus had been very good at this game, but Hilarion knew better than to think it one of his own strengths. Then again, political acuity had gotten Sejanus imprisoned, his brother exiled, and his house doomed to crumble away with no son to inherit it, and Hilarion, for all his faults, would not make the same mistake twice.

But he could not imagine standing before their cranky, sleep-rumpled king and telling Attolis that he ought to be careful of a mere rumor.

What is this?: Twisted Princesses were a popular Yuletide fandom (2 years ago? 3 years ago? not sure). In general the stories they generated were a bit too grotesque for my taste, but I liked this take on Mulan in which she becomes a feared guardian spirit for China.
