Reliance is a linked series of four Firefly stories by
Reliance
I'm not a big Simon and Kaylee shipper in the normal way of things but this is a beautiful story, of how Simon brings out Kaylee's natural intelligence and let's it shine all set against the backdrop of her pregnancy with his first child.

“You can know all the math in the 'Verse, but take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her home.” – Mal Reynolds, Serenity

A study of Kaylee, by way of Simon.

Characters/Pairings: Crew (individually, this isn't teamfic)
Length: 5,774 words

What is this?: This is a "fork in the road" AU in which the independents win the battle of Serenity Valley and, as a result, go on, slowly to win the war. It then takes various groups of the Firefly characters and looks at how this would affect them. My favourite is the very first, Wash's story, but all of them are interesting and well written.

Fandom: Firefly
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Mal, Zoe, Crew
Length: Short Story

What I love about this: Well firstly this is simply beautifully written. It has a story within a story structure that allows the author to play around with language a little. But it's also a story that seems to sum up Firefly's spirit of make do and never give up.

Characters/Pairings: Jayne, Simon
Length: Short Story

What I love about this: Well, obviously, it's a Firefly/Zombies crossover but what's actually great about it is Jayne and his thoughts about zombies "Still, a man can't complain about easy targets. That'd just be rude." At the same time the zombie threat is given a plausible background and we are given to understand the horror of it, even through Jayne's slightly skewed viewpoint.

Characters/Pairings: Jayne, Kaylee
Length: Short Story

What I love about this: ana_grrl writes a great Jayne. This is a funny and sweet little piece in which Kaylee needs cheering up and Jayne, once he's figured this out, does his best as only Jayne can!
Confounding
Fandom: Firefly
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Kaylee
Length: Several Very Short Stories

What I love about this: A series of essentially very short stories each of which is a retelling of a fairy tale, set in the Firefly 'verse and featuring Kaylee. Some are what ifs? or might have beens, and some you can imagine happening within canon. It's a clever idea, well executed.
