Danny wasn't entirely sure when he was. Geological epochs hadn't really been his thin. It was definitely dull, however, entirely harmless but dull as ditchwater. Besides he was getting tired of eating plants, so when an anomaly opened he ran through it with more than usual enthusiasm.

He paused in the new environment to take stock. He was standing on a hill side. He could see conifers and ferns, but no grass. Large creatures moved about in the plain below him. Danny squinted. They looked like stegosaurus.

He had a suspicion he might be yearning for dull again before long.

At this point one of the velociraptors seized the anomaly detection device that Mr. Temple had place on a picnic table and carried it through the anomaly. I took the decision that the risk of contamination of the time line was low and opted not to pursue.

I was not aware, at that point, that the velociraptor had also stolen half a dozen coke cans, a toy car and a comemorative silver jubilee plate - all left behind by members the public. I believe Miss Lewis is dealing with the claims for compensation.

What is this?: I'm not sure how I stumbled across this but it is a lovely piece written from the point of view of the Sea Witch who bargains with the Little Mermaid for her voice. It is a compassionate story, revealing the Sea Witch to be be wise, and kind, within limits, as well as resigned to the way the story has changed over time.

I'm never sure about to the extent to which these are really fanfic or, as this one tags itself "Revisionist Fairy Tales". This one is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and its summary captures the story perfectly:

What is this?: It was years since I'd read a Dune novel when I read this, so my understanding of the details of where it diverges from canon are a little hazy. It feels very true to Frank Herbert's books and his style of writing, but it pulls he focus of that original story away from Paul and places it on Irulan instead. In process it gives a far larger role (than basically that of a passive pawn) to her and, similarly, to Chani.

What is this?: This is an original short story set in Iain M. Banks' Culture universe. I actually forgot, halfway through this, that I wasn't reading one of Banks' own stories. I think it captures his universe really well - the vast potential of the technology, his own rather ambivalent attitude to his utopia, the potential for bickering, lots of silly spaceship names...

In this story a group of Culture ships and their crews encounter a threat in a solar system whose worlds are not members, or even aware, of the Culture. As the situation becomes increasingly desperate all those involved become locked in a debate about who has the right to choose whether a population is rescued or not. That makes the story sound very dry, but everyone/thing involved is a distinct character and the stakes are grippingly high.

Faster by

I'm a big fan of Clint and Natasha as best friends and this story captures really well the sense that they are almost, but not quite lovers.

What is this?: Hobbes and Bacon appears to have been a four part web comic series tribute to Calvin and Hobbes by Pants are Overrated. In the way of these things several other webcomic artists picked up on it (I particularly like this one).

Obviously this was pretty much designed to be a Yuletide fandom and there are several stories for it each year. This one particularly stood out for me, it provides some back story, gently makes fun of the social justice Internet, and lovingly fleshes out the characters of both adult Calvin and Susie, as well as Bacon.
