Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: General Audiences
Characters/Pairings: Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Clint Barton, Pepper Potts, Steve Rogers Natasha Romanov, Thor, Darcy Lewis, Jane Foster, Erik Selvig, Nick Fury, Maria Hill
Length: 17,034

What is this?: Since stumbling across this I've discovered that there is almost a sub-genre of "The Avengers go on a Road Trip" stories on AO3. However this was the first I came across and it still makes me giggle. Naturally it is all Tony Stark's idea to begin with (give or take how sneaky you think Colonel Fury is), and he takes Banner with him, but by the end almost everyone has joined in and they are touring around America's roadside attractions and fighting a little light crime on the side.

What is this?: This is a steampunk AU retelling of the Avengers movie. It is cleverly done and avoids the trap of adhering too strongly to the movie storyline, so it still has the opportunity to suprise and to charm.

Fandom: MCU
Rating: Mature
Characters/Pairings: Clint/Natasha, Bucky/Natasha, Fury, Coulson, Hill
Length: 13,516

What is this?: This is a retelling, based on Comic-based backstory of Natasha's reawakening from 55 years of frozen sleep and her recruitment to S.H.I.E.L.D. This is a pretty brutal Natasha, but one I think that is more true to her character than a lot of fanfic portrayals which tend to soften her. It's been tagged "Extensive Headcanon" but I prefer to think of it as "Extensive Worldbuilding" creating a, within universe believable, back story for the Black Widow and her existence as an independent operator in the modern world.

I was excited, on going back to re-read this, to notice there is a sequel.

Characters/Pairings: Loki/Toni, Clint/Coulson/Natasha
Length: 45,786

NB. Image by [archiveofourown.org profile] reena_jenkins

What is this?: To my embarrassment I seem to have a bit of a thing for Loki/Tony despite the many, many reasons why it makes no sense. Loki and Toni's Excellent Adventure in World Saving genderswaps Tony (more or less just because) and has Loki change sex and get pregnant. Despite that rather inauspicious sounding set up, its actually a hugely entertaining read. Toni is very much Tony Stark so she's funny and smart-mouthed even when everyone is having issues left right and centre. Oh yes, and they get to save the world.

Fandom: MCU
Rating: Teen and Up
Characters/Pairings: Peggy Carter/Gabe Jones, Howard Stark, Nick Fury, Phil Coulson, Timothy "Dum Dum" Dugan, Tony Stark
Length: 12,624

What is this?: This tells Peggy Carter's life after the events of Captain America, following her as she gets married, has a child called Nicholas and finally lives to see the first days of the Avengers.

Fandom: MCU
Rating: Gen
Characters/Pairings: Tony Stark, Loki, Pepper Potts, Phil Coulson, Nick Fury, Darcy Lewis, Jane Foster
Length: 27,064

What is this?: From the summary: The one where, instead of becoming a supervillain when he fell to Earth, Loki somehow ended up as Tony Stark's personal assistant.. It's a cracky premise and the kind of story which could go either way, but really works here. The cost is probably that this isn't the megalomaniac Loki which we are arguably given in the many of the Marvel films, but mischief-making, petulant teenager more beloved of fandom. However, I happen to think mischevious Loki is more interestign than megalomaniac Loki so I'm not really complaining.

Because, obviously, Coulson was running an internet community dedicated to Captain America. Their reaction to his death, and Captain America's reaction to that, rings true to life and is more than a little weepy.

In which Loki's attempt to mind control Tony in the Avengers works and so, obviously, Tony suggests a much better plan than attempting to take over just the Earth to Loki. It's also Loki/Tony which is definitely one of my vices. You need to pay attention to follow the sequence of events which appear out of order, though they are numbered which helps orient yourself in the story. It works for me, but I can imagine others finding it frustrating.

This is a lovely little bit of comedy. Clint and Natasha secretly got married and Tony finds out. Mostly this is Thor's fault.

This is a funny and charming story set in the aftermath of The Winter Soldier. Bucky attempts to put himself together. This involves intensive surveillance of Steve Rogers and, along the way, the discovery of coffee, grilled cheese and a motley collection of old-aged pensioners. The funniest thing about it is Bucky's sarcasm that runs through the story.

There are later stories in the series which are still really funny, but stray into the domestic considerably further than this does.

This is a rambling epistolary Steve/Tony story. It has some lovely bits from Steve initial impatience with and misunderstanding of Tony, though action and adventure, and Tony buying Steve a dog! It's definitely on the fluffy side and, at 708(!) chapters somewhat overlong, but if fluffy Steve/Tony is your thing then I'd say it was worth it.
